Chamber measurement methods and aeration effect on greenhouse gas fluxes during composting CIGR Journal
Park, Kyu-Hyun; Ngwabie, Ngwa Martin; Wagner-Riddle, Claudia.
Composting has the potential to mitigate methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from manure.  The heterogeneous nature of emitting surfaces makes it difficult to quantify these emissions.  CH4 and N2O fluxes measured using eight small chambers (0.72 m2) and a mega chamber (90 m2) were compared, and the effect of aeration on the fluxes during composting was studied.  Two batches of compost were placed in three channels and 2-3 small flux chambers were deployed on each channel.  The channels were enclosed by a building serving as a mega chamber.  Chamber location significantly affected gas fluxes, pointing to strong spatial heterogeneity.  Mean CH4 fluxes from the small chambers were similar or 1.4 times higher compared to the mega chamber.  Mean...

Gonzalez, Jean-louis.
The early diagenesis of Cd and Hg has been studied in different coastal areas (vasière Ouest-Gironde, Pertuis d'Antioche, baie de Marennes-Oléron). For these two metals, the fluxes at the sediment-water interface have been calculated. Considering only molecular diffusion, the diffusionnal fluxes of Cd and Hg to the colurnn water are negligible with regard to both the particular fluxes to the sediments and the inputs of the "Gironde" and "Charente" ·,estuaries. The take into account of the different processes which affect the ex changes at the interface (erosion, bioturbation) permits more realistic an estimation of the role of sediments in the geochemical cycle of Cd and Hg. The results show that up to 50% of particular Cd and Hg which are integrated into...

Munschy, Catherine.
The presence and geochemical behaviour of herbicides were investigated in estuarine and marine waters of the French coasts (Seine, Charente, Gironde estuaries and Rhône delta). These organic contaminants were quantified by capillary Gas Chromatography (GC) using Nitrogen-Phosphorus Detecter and identified by GCIMS (Mass Spectrometry). A liquid-solid extraction method using XAD-2 resins was developed,  allowing the analysis of both chloro-triazines and their degradation products in the nanogram per litre (ng.l-1) detection range. Different types of chemicals were identified in the estuarine and coastal waters: triazine, amide and acetanilide herbicides. These compounds are mainly present in the water phase, with less than 1% associated with particulate...

Treguier, Cathy; Schaeffer, Julien; Le Saux, Jean-claude; Cochennec-laureau, Nathalie; Le Guyader, Soizick.

Munaron, Dominique.
Our study aims at making progress the estimate of herbicide and nutrient inputs to the Marennes-Oleron bay which could influence summer oysters mortalities, and to bring by modeling a better understanding of the dynamics of these compounds in the shellfish-farming area. The development of a strategy adapted to the Charente river and its estuary reveals that agricultural activity on the catchment area is omnipresent, as well on the level of the nitrogen and herbicides contributions. It is thus necessary to specify Charente fluxes, which is the main tributary of the Marennes-Oleron bay, in order to better characterize its impact on shellfishfarming activity. Use of a dispersion model will constitute an invaluable help in the risk assessment with respect to...

Paticat, Francois.
The aim of the study is to determine how seawater is used in Ré island marine ponds (Charente-Maritime, France). Thus, we assessed the ecosystem functioning, estimated its historical evolution and determined the most suitable ways to improve current management processes. The knowledge of seawater management is essential to ensure wetland future and meet the numerous interests of wetland stakeholders, especially in term of seawater sharing. Consequently, it is necessary to consider the Ré island marine embanked wetland through its natural as well as human characteristics. Our work followed two research axes. First, a survey and a description of wetland activities were realized through their management types and their water use features, knowing that human...

The phenomenon of summer mortalities of the Pacific cupped oyster Crassostrea gigas is observed in France since the beginning of the 90's. These mortalities are classically associated to younger stages and summer temperatures and occur during the reproduction period of the animal. The studies undertaken during the project Morest (2001-2005), showed that a number of biological and environmental risks, the interaction of them induces lethal stresses for animals in physiological weakness, exists in summer. Among these risks, that which is withstood by the oysters bred close to the sediment proved to be significant in intertidal areas. In Quiberon bay (southern Brittany, France), the breeding practices of sowing oysters in deep water is thus likely to expose...

Mazouni, Nabila; Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc; Landrein, Sonia.
The impact of suspended oyster culture (Crassostrea gigas, Thunberg) on oxygen and nutrient fluxes has been studied in situ, in a coastal lagoon (Thau, France), during a seasonal cycle. On the first plan of the multiple factorial correspondences analysis (MCA), seasons were well discriminated. The fluxes were maximum in summer and minimum in winter. However, this seasonal pattern was not only linked to the water temperature, as autumn and spring (similar temperatures of about 12 degrees C) were distinct in the second factorial plan (2.3). Oxygen uptake by the oyster cultures varied between 0 mu mol m(-2) h(-1) (January) and 11 823 +/- 377 mu mol m(-2) h(-1) (July). Ammonia and nitrate-nitrites were released into the water column respectively at a rate of...

Monitoring viral contamination in shellfish growing areas ArchiMer
Le Guyader, Soizick; Pommepuy, Monique; Atmar, Robert.
Human and animal fecal wastes and urine contain a large number of different viruses that can enter the environment through the discharge of waste materials from infected individuals. Despite the high diversity of viruses that are introduced into the environment by human fecal pollution, only a few have been recognized to cause disease in association with consumption of contaminated shellfish. Viruses are present in shellfish in very low numbers. Nevertheless, they are present in sufficient quantities to pose a health risk as presented. This low level of contamination has made it necessary to develop highly sensitive viral extraction methods to ensure virus recovery from shellfish tissues. The most common route for accidental contamination is after heavy...

Otolith growth in trout Oncorhynchus mykiss: supply of Ca2+ and Sr2+ to the saccular endolymph ArchiMer
Payan, P; Borelli, G; Priouzeau, F; De Pontual, Helene; Boeuf, G; Mayer Gostan, N.
Kinetic and pharmacological characteristics of Ca2+ fluxes across the saccular epithelium of trout were studied using a perfused isolated inner ear. Ca-45(2+) influx from the Ringer solution to the endolymph was 3-4 nmoles h(-1) mu(-1) endolymph, which corresponds to a global turnover rate of the endolymph calcium of 200% h(-1). Ca2+ entry into the proximal endolymph was faster than into the distal fluid. Net Ca2+ movement across the saccular epithelium depended on the direction and intensity of the chemical gradient of calcium between the Ringer solution and the endolymph. Increasing the calcium concentration in the Ringer solution up to 4.4 mmol l(-1) provoked an accumulation of Ca2+ in both proximal and distal endolymphs, and equilibrium was reached...

A large collaborative program has studied the coupled air‐ice‐ocean‐wave processes occurring in the Arctic during the autumn ice advance. The program included a field campaign in the western Arctic during the autumn of 2015, with in situ data collection and both aerial and satellite remote sensing. Many of the analyses have focused on using and improving forecast models. Summarizing and synthesizing the results from a series of separate papers, the overall view is of an Arctic shifting to a more seasonal system. The dramatic increase in open water extent and duration in the autumn means that large surface waves and significant surface heat fluxes are now common. When refreezing finally does occur, it is a highly variable process in space and time. Wind and...

Particulate matter and organic carbon budgets for the Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean) ArchiMer
Durrieu De Madron, X; Abassi, A; Heussner, S; Monaco, A; Aloisi, Jc; Radakovitch, O; Giresse, P; Buscail, R; Kerherve, P.
An analysis of sedimentological, sediment trap and hydrological data was performed to investigate the transport and fate of particulate matter in the Gulf of Lions. The sedimentological properties outline the major sedimentary units of the shelf (Rhone prodelta, mid-shelf mud belt, outer shelf) and slope. The geometry of these sedimentary units and the southwestwards increase of particulate fluxes on the slope highlight the influence of the general cyclonic circulation on the dispersion of land-derived particulate matter. Considering the known input and output terms, budgets of particulate matter and organic carbon in the Gulf of Lions are proposed. Inputs were river supply, atmospheric deposition and primary production; outputs were sediment burial and...

The domain of the surface ocean and lower atmosphere is a complex, highly dynamic component of the Earth system. Better understanding of the physics and biogeochemistry of the air-sea interface and the processes that control the exchange of mass and energy across that boundary define the scope of the Surface Ocean-Lower Atmosphere Study (SOLAS) project. The scientific questions driving SOLAS research, as laid out in the SOLAS Science Plan and Implementation Strategy for the period 2004-2014, are highly challenging, inherently multidisciplinary and broad. During that decade, SOLAS has significantly advanced our knowledge. Discoveries related to the physics of exchange, global trace gas budgets and atmospheric chemistry, the CLAW hypothesis (named after its...
